The passion for engines came from his elder brother. He began in the early 1970s on a Gilera 50 in Audax events and later raced in Formula Monza for the Scuderia Giovanni Salvati.

Campi gives him a chapter of his own, titled after the road he took afterwards: from Formula Monza to offshore racing.
