In 1982, the class’s last year, he finished runner-up in the Trofeo Cadetti — behind Luciano Schiatti and ahead of Ivan Valori. His car carried his own name: Mercatelli.
A rival, in Campi’s book, calls him one of the fastest and most experienced drivers in the class: he settled for staying behind him rather than risk a pass. Not to be confused with Giulio Mercatelli, who raced a Mig.
