Ghia

Giacinto Ghia founded the coachbuilding firm in Turin in 1916. An air raid destroyed the works in 1943; Ghia died the following year, and Mario Boano and Giorgio Alberti took over the company. In 1948 the subsidiary Ghia-Aigle was set up at Aigle in Switzerland; it became independent in 1953. In the 1950s Luigi Segre made it known internationally, with designs for Chrysler and the Karmann Ghia for Volkswagen. After Segre’s death in 1963 the firm changed hands several times: Alejandro de Tomaso bought it in 1967, and in 1970 it went to Ford.

On the Fiat 500, Ghia showed the Ghia Jolly at the 1957 Turin Motor Show. The Giardiniera was the basis for the Ghia Jolly Giardiniera and for the Ziba pick-up, shown at the 1961 Turin Motor Show.

Pietro Frua designed the spider on the Fiat 500, and Ghia-Aigle built it. It was shown at the 1957 Turin Motor Show and remained a one-off.
