Weinsberg

Karosseriewerke Weinsberg was founded in 1912, thirteen kilometres from Heilbronn, by the plasterer Gustav Alt and the mason Wilhelm Schuhmacher, with capital of 80,000 gold marks. Horse-drawn carriages came first; in 1925 NSU at Neckarsulm placed the first series order for bodywork, and the firm went on to work for Auto Union, BMW, Citroën, Daimler-Benz, Ford, Opel and Wanderer, among others.

Fiat joined as a major customer in 1930 and bought the company in 1938. Weinsberg nevertheless remained a separate company – never the same firm as the Heilbronn works, but its sister under the same owner. Weinsberg built bodies and supplied accessories; from 1955 the sunroofs came from there. The Heilbronn works is covered under Neckar.

In 1970 Fiat gave up manufacturing in Germany and sold the coachworks to a German trust company. Under its own name Weinsberg then built motorhomes until 1992; as a toolmaker in Bretzfeld the company is still in business today.
